Benefits of MVHR
Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery
MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery) is a whole-dwelling ventilation system designed to continuously supply fresh air and extract stale air at a low, consistent rate. The system can be boosted when required and fully complies with Building Regulations Part F – System 4.
At South Holland Air Conditioning, MVHR systems are typically installed within a loft space or designated cupboard. Using rigid ducting, fresh filtered air is supplied to habitable rooms such as living areas and bedrooms, while stale, moisture-laden air is extracted from ‘wet’ rooms including kitchens and bathrooms. Discreet ceiling diffusers are fitted and carefully balanced to ensure optimal airflow throughout the property.
High-Efficiency Heat Recovery
MVHR units incorporate a high-performance polymer heat exchanger that recovers heat from the extracted air and uses it to pre-warm incoming fresh air before it is delivered into living spaces. Heat recovery efficiency typically ranges from 70% to 95%, depending on the type of exchanger used.
Counter-flow heat exchangers offer the highest level of efficiency, reaching up to 95% heat recovery, and are increasingly preferred as Building Regulations continue to demand improved thermal performance. For modern, energy-efficient homes, this represents the best available option.
Intelligent Control Options
MVHR systems can automatically increase ventilation when higher moisture levels are detected, such as during cooking or bathing. Boost functionality can be activated:
- Manually, via single or multiple wall switches
- Automatically, using humidity or environmental sensors
These controls are usually positioned in or near wet rooms for maximum effectiveness. With an MVHR system in place, background ventilators within windows are no longer required.
Energy Efficiency & Compliance
For housebuilders and developers, energy efficiency remains a key consideration when selecting ventilation systems. A well-specified MVHR unit with low power consumption and high thermal efficiency plays a vital role in reducing a home’s Dwelling Emission Rate (DER) and meeting carbon reduction targets in a cost-effective way.
Improved Indoor Air Quality
As awareness of indoor air quality continues to grow, MVHR is increasingly recognised as the preferred ventilation solution for modern UK homes. Poor ventilation has been strongly linked to health issues, and MVHR provides a consistent supply of fresh, filtered air while maintaining energy efficiency.
At South Holland Air Conditioning, we design and install MVHR systems that deliver healthier living environments, improved comfort, and long-term energy savings—making them an ideal solution for new builds and energy-efficient renovations.
MVHR and air conditioning
Different Systems, One Complete Comfort Solution
MVHR and air conditioning are designed to do different jobs—and that is exactly why they work so well together.
MVHR Provides
- A constant supply of fresh, filtered air
- Removal of stale air, moisture, and pollutants
- Heat recovery to reduce heating costs
- Balanced ventilation across the whole building
Air Conditioning Provides
- Accurate heating and cooling on demand
- Stable indoor temperatures in all seasons
- Humidity control during warmer months
- Zoned comfort where and when you need it
Together, they create a complete indoor climate system that keeps spaces fresh, comfortable, and controlled at all times.
Healthier Indoor Air, Better Everyday Comfort
Modern buildings are increasingly airtight. While this improves energy efficiency, it also means poor ventilation can quickly lead to stale air, excess humidity, and reduced comfort.
MVHR solves this by delivering continuous fresh air without heat loss, while high-quality filtration helps remove:
- Dust and airborne pollutants
- Allergens and odours
- Excess moisture that causes condensation and mould
Air conditioning then enhances comfort further by maintaining the ideal temperature and humidity, even during heatwaves or high internal heat gains.
The result is air that feels noticeably cleaner, fresher, and more comfortable, especially in bedrooms, home offices, and commercial working environments.
